The principle of teeth whitening consists in whitening the enamel itself professionally and safely using a gel with highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide. The most common method is in-office whitening, where the gums and other soft tissues are isolated and protected with a protective barrier before the treatment, and the gel itself is applied to the visible surfaces of the teeth in several cycles. The entire visit takes about an hour and the result is immediately visible. The second method, which is suitable to combine with the previous one for the best result, is home whitening. First, impressions are made in the doctor's office, according to which the so-called carriers for home whitening are produced. A whitening gel is applied to them for a specific period of time and the carrier is placed on the teeth, ideally during the night.

Another option is internal whitening. This is the treatment of teeth after root canal therapy that turn gray after a certain time. In the dental office, the mentioned whitening gel is applied directly to the tooth, which is left in the tooth for the time necessary for a great result.

After external whitening, a so-called white diet is necessary for a long-term result. The patient should not consume foods that are colored for several days, so that the teeth do not literally absorb the dyes from the food.
